Prayer of the Week 4/24/19

You who live in the shelter of the Most High,
who abide in the shadow of the Almighty,
will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress;
my God, in whom I trust.”

Psalm 91:1-2 (NRSV)

O God, our Help in ages past, our Hope for years to come, you are the rock on whom we build our lives. You are the shelter and refuge to whom we flee in trouble. You are the music of our souls, the light of our minds and the strength of our lives. We dwell secure in the fortress of your love.

We trust in you and are saved. We call upon you and find restoration. Your faithfulness is our shield and our safe dwelling place in all the stages and places of our lives. Meet us at this point in our lives and assure us afresh of your mighty power for each need we encounter day by day.

In these days of trouble and turmoil throughout the world, we need to return to these words over and over. It is so easy to lose sight of your sovereignty and let go of our security in you. The world would scoff and does scoff at our simple faith, but the celebration of Easter is a reminder that we can live in this world with assurance and confidence. Your power of life is stronger than any hostile terror on earth, for your Resurrection assures us that death is and will be swallowed up in your omnipotent power of eternal life. Nothing can take this away from people of faith.

Forgive us when we take our eyes off of your promises. Rescue and restore us where we are off base. Lift us and guide us where we are in danger. Open our eyes to see the evidence of your work on our behalf. We praise you with gratitude for your mighty deeds that protect and nurture us and your living and active Word that directs and corrects us by the power of your Spirit.

We bless your name—The Holy One, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer. Amen.
