Prayer of the Week 3/20/19

When our enemies heard that we were aware of their plot and that God had frustrated it, we all returned to the wall, each to our own work.

Then I said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, “The work is extensive and spread out, and we are widely separated from each other along the wall. Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, join us there. Our God will fight for us!”

Lord, from time immemorial, mankind has been building. Generation after generation builds on the foundations laid before them, building and rebuilding to meet their needs, fulfill their dreams and undergird their faith traditions.

Today, as we turn to your Word and reflect on this story from ancient Israel, we are reminded of the depth of emotion and the earnest determination and sacrifice of time and resources that people of all ages have made and continue to make as we build and re-build, sometimes against great odds, complexities and challenges.

This is a timely subject for us, for we are a nation involved in re-building at home and abroad. From the devastation of terrorism and of disastrous forces of nature, we are constantly trying to re-build for a safer and better tomorrow. Among those sharing in this prayer, there are those who are re-building lives, careers, or relationships. Families, businesses, corporations, governments, churches, schools, health services—most all at some point will face the exciting and monumental challenges of building and renovating, with accompanying disruptions and adjustments to be made. Help us learn how to approach our challenges by faith and to walk through them in a manner that brings honor to your name.

As Nehemiah led the people in his day, may we build in the spirit of cooperation—joining hearts and hands with faith to build as God leads, trusting in His guidance.

In all we do, may we remember to live in accordance with the way Jesus taught us to pray…

Our Father, who art in heaven. Hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the Kingdom, and the Power and the Glory, forever. Amen.
